Emergency lighting is lighting that kicks in when there is a mains supply failure. It is a failsafe measure to ensure continued on-site safety and protect the occupants of a building.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, businesses must install emergency lighting in their premises by law.
Here at JPS Fire Protection we offer twice yearly tests and ensure one of the tests aims to power up the emergency lights for 3 hours. Emergency escape lighting must comply with current standards which requires them to remain on for a minimum of 3 hours.(Failure to light for 3 hours may require a replacement battery).
Our service engineer creates location sheets which are which will be available to you so you can easily carry out your own monthly test. He will happily explain how to conduct monthly tests and show your staff how to carry out your responsibilities.
The purpose of emergency lighting is to illuminate areas that lead occupants to the nearest fire exit. In an outage, the lights should remain on for upto 3 hours.
This is to ensure all occupants can safely make their way to the exits and enable attending emergency services safe access to the building. When the power to the building is restored the emergency lights should automatically recharge themselves.
